Is there a FurnaceZilla in your house?

A FurnaceZilla is smelly, noisy, and downright dangerous. Here's how to tell if you have one lurking in your home and what you can do about it.

Improper Installations

You wouldn't believe how many heating systems are installed incorrectly. We've seen it all—even in brand new homes.

Improperly installed ventilation pipesSometimes construction crews cut corners on ventilation systems. When a system looks this disorganized, you can plan on an inefficient heating system. And years of money down the drain for high heating bills and furnace repairs.

Rusted pipeAs air rises through the exhaust pipe, water sometimes condenses on the outside. If the pipe is not installed correctly, this water runs down the pipe and into the furnace or boiler, corroding and rusting out the units.

Lack of Maintenance

Because Alaskan's ask a lot of their heating systems through the long winters, furnaces and boilers need regular maintenance. Skip one annual service up here, and the outcome can be serious:

Dirty Filter Dirty filters increase the heat inside the furnace and will eventually cause the system to shut down. In the meantime, smelly, stale and moldy air is re-circulated into your home. And because of the increased load, efficiency goes down, causing you to spend more money on your heating bill.

When ventilation systems become clogged or heat exchangers crack, the results can be deadly. These failures will lead to the release of odorless but poisonous Carbon Monoxide gas into your home. The warning signs are not always obvious—even with a CO detector.

Abominable Boiler
The "Abominable Boiler" is just as risky to your family's health and peace of mind.

Blower motor  Dirty boiler pump  Cracked igniter

When these components fail, you'll know it right away: the furnace or boiler goes quiet and the house gets cold fast.
