Tips To Spring Clean Your Home (And Your HVAC System)

Spring is officially upon us, even if our thermometers don’t agree quite yet. Warmer weather is just around the corner, which means it’s time to think about spring cleaning your home.

It’s the perfect excuse to declutter, organize your cupboards, dust your surfaces and maybe even vacuum in the deep dark black hole underneath your couch. Only if you’re feeling brave.

Alaskans spent a lot of time indoors over the winter months, which means your HVAC system has been working hard keeping your family comfortable and healthy over the last few months.

It’s worth adding your system to your cleaning list. Whether it’s time for scheduled maintenance, a duct-cleaning service or perhaps even a furnace or boiler upgrade, we’ve got you sorted.

Spring Cleaning List

Here are some essentials to add to your spring cleaning list:

  • Test batteries in your smoke detectors.
  • Wipe down and disinfect all surfaces.
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures.
  • Clean windows and windowsills.
  • Vacuum curtains and blinds.
  • Deep clean all floors.
  • Clean oven.
  • Clean kitchen appliances.
  • Empty fridge and defrost freezer.
  • Organize all drawers and closets.
  • Wash all bedding and pillows.
  • Vacuum couch.
  • Clean lint trap in washer and dryer.

Okay! That’s a lot of progress. But what about cleaning your air?

Unfortunately, in today’s world, pollution is everywhere. Even the air we consider “fresh”, coming from outside, has as many as 30 million dust of pollutant particles per cubic foot. Now thing about all the dust you’ve stirred up and all the chemicals you’ve used to clean your home.

The good news is that a high-efficiency air filter can remove many of the contaminants.

Air filters for Home

The right air filter will be able to remove allergy-causing particles, perform well consistently, be economical to maintain and handle a large volume of air efficiently. There are two main types: a furnace-mounted, whole-house unit, or a portable single-room unit. You can read more about the pros and cons of each type in this handy blog post on our website.

We recommend the Lennox PureAir Air Purifier. It provides the same level of filtration as hospital inpatient care or general surgery, which can help remove impurities like dust, pollens, bacteria, viruses and other contaminants that have been lurking in your home.

Duct Cleaning Services

You’re doing well. Your home is sparkling (you even cleaned under the fridge and behind the dryer, go you!) and the air inside your home is valley fresh. It’s incredibly satisfying to look around.

One area people often forget is the inside of their air ducts. It’s amazing how quickly things like dust, dirt, pollen, animal dander, mold spores, bacteria and fungus builds up inside your air ducts, especially during winter while your HVAC system is working full-time. Every time the furnace comes on, it re-circulates contaminants throughout your home. It’s gross to think about, and it can be harmful if you have any family members who suffer from allergies or asthma (seriously – if you want to know more about it, you can read this blog post we wrote).

If you decide to spring clean your air ducts, you’ll need professional help. We’re happy to set up an appointment at a time that’s convenient for you to come and inspect your heating system. Our Comfort Consultant will then talk you through the process and give you a quote.

Carbon Monoxide Monitors

While we’re on the topic of air quality, there is a lot of technology available these days that can help make sure the air your family is breathing is healthy. One of those things are carbon monoxide monitors. These devices will trip an alarm if the amount in the air exceeds a pre-set level. Some can automatically shut down fuel-burning equipment when the concentration is too high.

It’s not technically spring cleaning, but it’s a valuable addition to any home. Talk to us today.

Spring Cleaning Tips

By this point, your home is going to be clean and ready for a summer of activity. However, since you have so much momentum, we’d love to offer you a few bonus spring cleaning tips.

Alaska is relatively unique in that we rely on our HVAC system for months of the year – not just for comfort, but for our safety and wellbeing. Extreme temperatures can come at a moment’s notice, so it’s essential to keep your furnace and boiler well-maintained and ready for action.

Here at HeartSource Mechanical, we’re proud dealers of Lennox furnaces and Weil-McLain boilers, and we recommend both brands because they’re high-quality and reliable. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your system, this could be the answer. Here are the key things you need to know.

New Furnaces

Lennox Residential Furnaces are high-efficiency HVAC systems that are designed to conserve energy and save money. The complementing air filtration systems help keep indoor air quality healthy and clean. We are a premier dealer with three different models available.

New Boilers

Weil-McLain has been in the boiler business since 1881. The design has changed a lot over the years with new technology and innovation. We have gas-fired and oil-fired options, including indirect-fired heaters, which produce twice the peak flow of a tankless coil.

In most homes, the single biggest use of energy is the HVAC system. Now that spring is here, and you’ll be able to shut down your system for a while, it’s the perfect time to consider an upgrade.

HVAC Maintenance

One effective way to ensure your HVAC system is always well-serviced and ready to go is to organize a preventative maintenance agreement (PMA) with your contractor. A PMA generally includes semi-annual inspections and maintenance checks to maintain peak efficiency. It’s also a great way to make sure you are saving as much money as possible on your utility bills.

The technician will check the system functions, safety controls and electrical components. They’ll also ensure proper airflow and change dirty filters (remember what we were saying about air quality earlier?), inspect the pumps and service the motors and belts as required.

You’ll also receive priority service if a failure occurs when you need your system most.

Spring Cleaning Quotes

Well, that’s just about everything. At this point, the only thing we can offer is some inspiration, so here is the best spring cleaning quote we’ve come across online:

“Spring cleaning isn’t just about sorting through things, and getting rid of clutter. It’s about taking stock of who you are, and how others see you. It’s a chance to redefine yourself, to chance expectations, and to remember that it’s never too late to recapture who you were, or to aim for who you want to be.” (Author unknown.)

It’s time to grab your vacuum cleaner, find your mop and bucket, and get started. We’ll be here when you’re ready to talk about air filtration, duct cleaning, carbon monoxide monitors, new furnaces or boilers or HVAC maintenance. Schedule an appointment today!
