Best Garage and Shop Heaters as the Weather Cools

One of the best things about living in Wasilla is having the space to indulge in your passions. That doesn’t mean just outdoor recreation (although that’s great too), but having space for a garage or shop that will protect your toys and keep you busy as the weather cools. Whether you’re restoring a boat, fixing up a truck, waxing your skis, woodworking, or chipping away at a craft project, you’re going to need a heater that will keep you comfortable as you work on your projects.

We spent a lot of time indoors. Temperatures in the Mat-Su Valley stay below freezing for up to six months of the year, which means a great HVAC system can make all the difference. When it comes to garage and shop heaters, it’s hard to go past Modine’s Hot Dawg. This is the most trusted residentially-certified gas-fired heater in North America. Aside from getting great heat, they’re very reliable and made in the United States, which means they comply with the Buy American Act.

Want to skip ahead and just order a new garage or shop heater? Talk to our expert technicians about your needs when you schedule an appointment.

Why Modine Is Great for Heating Garages and Shops

Modine’s Hot Dawg Garage Heater has versatile installation options that allows you to maximize the workspace in your shop by getting rid of clunky space heaters. It’s available in six different sizes, ranging from 30,000 to 125,000 BTUs, with a 10-year warranty on the heat exchanger. It’s also incredibly quiet, which means you can work without the distraction of having a loud machine running in the background, saving your ears as you while away the hours this winter.

There are a number of features that make it ideal:

  • Low-profile design installs one inch from the ceiling with only two angle brackets
  • Heater has 100% shut-off with continuous retry to allow for safe ignition
  • Permanently lubricated motor reduces the need for maintenance
  • Operates on natural or propane gas

Depending on your needs, you can choose from power-exhausted, power-exhausted with blower, separated combustion, and separated combustion with blower models. Modine heaters also come with 30, 60, and 90-degree deflector hoods, vibration isolation kits, and summer-winter toggle switches. They’re certified for residential, commercial, and industrial use.

Being made in America is important, because it means that Modine heaters are straightforward to service and repair and spare parts are easy to source. They’re also a very reliable garage and shop heater and should keep you comfortable for at least the next decade.

Modine Garage and Shop Heater FAQs

If you haven’t had a Modine Hot Dawg Garage Heater before, it’s normal to have a lot of questions. Our friendly and knowledgeable HVAC technicians will be happy to talk your call and explain all the features and benefits of this product. However, here are the answers to a few common questions:

What size Hot Dawg do I need to heat a garage?

  • 30,000 BTU = 1 car garages
  • 45,000 BTU = 2 car garages
  • 60,000 BTU = 3 car garages
  • 75,000 BTU = Larger garages
  • 100,000 BTU = Out-buildings

Does the Hot Dawg vent outside the garage?

Yes, carbon dioxide is safely vented outside with a power exhauster.

What supply voltage is required for a Hot Dawg?

The Modine Hot Dawg requires a 115-volt, 60 hertz supply that is hard-wired to the unit. There are no plug-ins available. That means you’ll need a licensed contractor to help you wire it in.

What size gas connection does the Hot Dawg have?

Hot Dawg has a half-inch gas connection. Again, you’ll need to ask a licensed contractor to take care of the piping, pressure regulators, and connectors, to ensure you meet the local codes.

Can I install the Hot Dawg by myself?

No. In addition to wiring up the electrical supply, and ensuring the gas is properly connected, you’ll need a licensed contractor to install your unit to the manufacturer’s recommendations or the warranty will be voided. Their insurance company won’t cover any claims arising from improper installation. This requires specialized training and tools, so please call the experts.

Speaking of warranties…

The Hot Dawg has a limited warranty that covers the cost of replacement parts due to defects in material and workmanship for 10 years on the heat exchanger and two years on the components. Again, this doesn’t cover labor charges for premature failure due to improper installation.
