You may be unfamiliar with what a boiler does, so time to get educated. Boilers are an important aspect of a house, and are responsible for generating steam, which then disperses through the rest of your home through the pipes. They are something you will need if you want to live comfortably. However, boilers, just like any system in your house, need regular maintenance to ensure they’re always operating properly.
So, unless you want to find yourself mid-shower with no hot water, you probably want to learn all you can about your boiler; but it shouldn’t be hard to figure out the inner workings, hence why we’re going to break it down for you.
Here’s a maintenance checklist to ensure it stays that way.

Become a Pro With This Boiler Maintenance Checklist
Winter is slowly approaching, which is why it’s the perfect time to perform a regular boiler maintenance check just to be sure things are functioning properly. Check out this super easy checklist that is completely doable for anyone. We promise this will not confuse you. If anything, you will shortly be a pro at boiler maintenance. Keep in mind, this checklist can be performed daily, monthly, or even yearly, it’s entirely up to you.
1.Inspect Your Boiler
First things first, you will want to inspect the entire boiler system. This means looking at the outside of it to see if there are any signs of cracks or leakages. Make sure you try your best to check out the back of the boiler as it may be hard to see if there are any signs of damage.
2. No Obstructions
Next, you will want to make sure that absolutely nothing is in the way of the boiler. HVAC companies will usually make sure to place the boiler in a specific place where nothing will be obstructing it—things such as leaves snow, ice, and any debris that may disrupt the functionality of the boiler. If there are materials in the way of the boiler, this may result in extreme problems and your boiler may break.
3. Inspect Combustion Air Opening for Blockages
Similar to the above step, again you want to make sure there isn’t anything blocking the passageways for the boiler to work properly, but in this case, we want to make sure that the combustion air opening is clear of any materials flying around such as grass clippings, pieces of magazine articles or newspapers getting in the way, or any plastic.
4. Check Temperature Readings
Another important step to perform is temperature readings. The boiler gauge is able to give us an accurate reading of the temperature that tells us if the boiler is operating properly. If the temperature is too high, this could result in the boiler overheating and water pressure increasing, which may cause a leakage.
5. Error Codes
If there’s an issue with your boiler, an error code will appear, which is extremely helpful to keep you updated if your boiler is experiencing any issues or malfunctioning.
6. Examine the Condensate Drain Line
This condensate drainpipe is designed to drain all the excess water produced from your boiler. Be sure to examine this drain line because you want to make sure nothing is getting clogged in there or that anything is blocking it. If your condensate drain line is clogged, you will hear a faint gurgling sound coming from the boiler. If that happens, you can rinse it thoroughly and refill or you can have one of our trained professionals come down to do it for you.
7. Listen for Any Abnormal Noises
The most apparent maintenance to perform on your boiler is making sure it isn’t making any strange and unusual noises. Look out for any of these noises:
- Buzzing
- Rattling
- Banging
- Gurgling
If you hear your boiler making these sounds, you can call an expert HVAC technician to come and look at it to diagnosis the problem.
8. Inspect the Burner Flame
On the boiler, there will usually be a flame that is lit. If you take a close look at the flame, you will either see a blue flame or a yellow flame. For a normal working boiler that is performing accurately, it should always be producing a blue flame. If you see that the burner flame is yellow, this may be a sign of carbon monoxide.
9. Make Sure All Wire Connection Is Set Up
This may seem like a silly step, but for a boiler to operate efficiently and properly, please make sure all the wire connections are set up accurately. If the wires aren’t set up the right way, this could result in malfunctions and boiler failures. If you have checked the wire connection after boiler installation, be sure to double-check, so you don’t run into any issues.
10. Check Your Control Settings
Just like the previous step, you want to ensure that all wiring is connected and check the control settings on the boiler. Checking the control settings will help you understand if your boiler is operating the way it is supposed to or what you should adjust it to.
We understand that this checklist may seem stressful for some, but we promise this will give you the proper resources you need to ensure your boiler is functioning at its best. If you are uneasy about performing the above boiler maintenance checklist, please feel free to call a trained technician. They will have no problem coming to take a look at your boiler—that is their job and why they are here to help you.
